Elastomers in Civil Engineering

Elastomers provide the mechanical engineer with many opportunities for reducing noise and vibration and in the provision of effective seals and flexible couplings. Elastomers have been exploited by engineers for over one hundred years, and there are many examples of the longevity of these materials in services. However, your company may need assistance to exploit elastomers to their fullest extent.

·       Are you fully aware of the potential for elastomer usage?

·       Do you understand how to design or select elastomeric components?

·       Do you know how to assess the most suitable elastomer?

·       Have you encountered premature failure of elastomeric components?

·       Have elastomeric components failed to meet their performance criteria?

·       Do you need impartial and confidential advice?

Rubber Consultants provides advice and services on a wide range of engineering components made from elastomeric materials both natural and synthetic.

Applications include mounting structures to reduce effect of external noise, vibration or seismic forces; isolating parts of structures (eg. music practice rooms) from internally generated sources of noise and vibration (eg. lift motors); accommodating thermal movement (bridge bearings, expansion joints, pipe couplings, etc); acting as a barrier to water, etc (water stops, plant linings, tunnel gaskets, etc), and a wide variety of others (roofing membranes, rubberized asphalt, rail pads, inflatable formers, concrete texturing, etc).

Materials include natural rubber, Neoprene (polychloroprene), butyl elastomers, nitrile elastomers, Hypalon (chlorosulphonated polyethylene), polyurethanes, cork composites and silicones.
